I was never really good with words.
So I discovered poetry in pictures. Stories emerge where lines meet and colors merge. Frame by frame, subjects reveal to me pieces of their personal narratives.
Avid lover of Japan’s unique lifestyle, I took my film camera and spent a year capturing the youth culture.
By shooting in analog format, I aspired to connect with my subjects in all of their subtleties. Thus, I learned more with less.
I found focus in the blurry.
Little did I know that this journey would deeply shape my identity as a photographer.
I hope that emotions can transcend through these images to inspire you.
Here are the stories they chose to tell.
July 26, 2017
Wow, already at ten! Time flies. I would love to have 50 people before my visa ends so I can work on a proper publication. Ah well! Maybe I should remind the concept of the project: I take one roll of film (10 pictures) and shoot them with no preparation with someone of my choosing. We hang around where my model wants!
Anyway, this week was with Kaori. As most of the people featured in that series, I met her in the street. She always looks super cool and I love her orange hair. We walked around Omotesando, grabbed a pizza at Pizza Slice and a coffee at Corner on Cat street. A good afternoon! I like Omotesando because it’s a bit quieter than Harajuku. Especially the area around the Undercover store. The cover picture is from the Wut Berlin, a crazy store with crazy designers!
The tenth picture, I guess she missed my 3 2 1 mark! But that’s what happens when you shoot ten shots consecutively with no cheating, blinking is bound to happen at some point! 🙂
What do you do?
I am a stylist assistant.
Any particular designer you are wearing right now?
MM6 and Marques Almeida. I really like the silhouettes, fabrics and colors of Marques!
Why did you choose this location and surroundings?
I come here often because anything around Harajuku is just so comfy.
Where do you go with your friends to have fun?
I go to Shibuya, Harajuku and Daikanyama.
Where do you spend your ‘leisure’ money?
Shopping!
Where do you go in Tokyo to relax?
Usually, in bookstores. My favorite is when I can relax and read a magazine at T-site (Daikanyama).
What’s your main hobby?
Fashion is the first. I like to watch movies, drinking coffee and eating sweets!
What is your favorite clothing store?
Delta in Yoyogi-Uehara, K3 in Aoyama&Daikanyama and Opening Ceremony in Harajuku.
Favorite current movies?
I am a big fan of Stanley Kubrick and Luc Besson, particularly A Clockwork Orange and The 5th Element.
What is on your playlist?
Amongst others, modern soul music and electronica.
How would you describe your style?
It’s all about the combination of the color and the patterns. I like leather, metal, etc.
I enjoy a cool outfit, not something too simple.
Do the arts influence it?
Yes! As do magazines and people.
On to next week! With Nashu, a youngster from Harajuku.
